Researchers at the Institute of Creative Technologies have released a new toolkit called Flexible Action and Articulated Skeleton (FAAST) that will enable gamers to use Kinect-supported gesture controls to play the popular PC game, World of Warcraft. According to Evan Suma from ICT, the tool has been developed by integrating the Kinect codes with an open source framework called OpenNI. Suma says,
“Our software communicates with the Kinect software and recognizes the user’s skeleton. It calculates each gesture you do and generates virtual keyboard commands, allowing you to communicate through them.”
The tools required for users to check the game out at their end can be downloaded from the FAAST website here. The source code for the project is open sourced as well. This means developers can use the code to make similar hacks available for other popular games. Here is a video demo of the hack in action.
